Neopentane gas is 2,2-dimethylpropane gas. Neopentane gas is a colorless gas and very flammable. It is relatively nontoxic at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. It is easily liquefied and is shipped as a liquefied gas in low pressure cylinders under its own vapor pressure of 48 kPa (7 psig) at 21.1oC.
2,2-dimethylpropane is used as a raw material in the production of isobutylene, which is used to manufacture synthetic Butyl rubber. It has also been used in halogenation reactions and in photoconductivity and molecular rearrangement studies.
